Rafael Martínez-Ybor great grandson of Vicente Martínez-Ybor, the visionary founder of Ybor City in Tampa, Florida, has generously sent us this image and description: “The family home was known as “La Quinta” (The Estate). Finished in December 1886 built on 28 acres and was destroyed by fire in1908. Located on the N.W. corner of 12th AVenue and 17th Street. The people in the picture are: Don Vicente Martinez-Ybor in straw hat shown here on right with umbrella in hand in company of his wife Mercedes (in black) center of photo and friends watching their children playing croquet. The two boys on left with mallets in hand are their sons Rafael (my grandfather) and Salvador (my uncle). The two girls one seated on the ground with umbrella left of Don Vicente and the other fifth from right with black skirt with white border are their daughters Jenny, Mirta, or Amalia. Note their English gardener bottom right Mr. Knowles (as he was called by the family), mowing the grass. They also had a dog in the picture called Roby (Ybor spelled backwards).
