Spectacular aerial view of the Villa Nueva complex in Plattekill, NY

“Queen of the Spanish Catskills.” Villa Nueva was the largest of an archipelago of some 20-30 hotels or boarding houses in the area that were run by and for Spaniards beginning in the 1920s. The frontón (or pelota vasca handball court) which we recently visited can be discerned at roughly nine o’clock; the fanshaped swimming pool is between the lake and the main buildings. At the top of the photo, you can see the New York State Thruway (I-87), which cut through the Villa Nueva properties when it was built in the early 1950s.
