Jerry Garcia, of the Grateful Dead-another descendent of Spanish emigrants

Rita Hayworth (Brooklyn, NY), Lou Piniella (Tampa, Florida), Martin Sheen (Dayton, Ohio) and… Not many people know that the legendary Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead fame is another product of the Spanish diaspora we are documenting here. His father, Jose Ramón García was born in La Coruña, Galicia, and emigrated to San Francisco in 1919 with his family. José Ramón was a musician and a band leader, and Jerry grew up hearing his father’s family make music at clan gatherings… The tale about Jerry García once mistaking his grandfather’s gaita (Galician bagpipes) for an elaborate bong is, it would seem, just so much hot air.
