Raquel Meller- a Spanish star

It would be difficult to exaggerate the popularity enjoyed all over the world by the Spanish singer and actress Raquel Meller (Tarazona 1882- Barcelona 1962) throughout the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Her New York engagements in the early ’20s were landmarks in the history of pop culture. Her “Spanish mystique” inspired lines of clothes, hairstyles and even dolls for young girls. It’s interesting to think of how the tens of thousands of Spanish immigrants in the US at the time viewed the style and popularity of this paisana… Click here to view some images of her and listen to the first recording of “La Violetera”.
