Gardiner, New York
In his petition for naturalization, filed in 1937, Luis Cendagorta, also known as Luis Cendagorta Galzarza gave as his residence 53 Cherry Street, in the heart of New York’s oldest Basque/Spanish enclave. Date and place of birth: July 20, 1906, Gautegiz de Arteaga, Vizcaya, Spain. Unmarried. Profession: cook. His witnesses were Antonio Zarandona (bartender, 48 Cherry Street) and Antonio Docobo (laundryman, 65 Cherry Street). Cendagorta’s profession, plus the fact that he is buried near Plattekill, New York, make us wonder if he may have worked in one of the many Spanish boarding houses in the area.
