“My dad had a lot of friends in Hollister and most of them were from Salamanca, the province, and the ones that were the farmers. Once we got to Monterey then there were Salamanquinos and so forth but there were a lot of others – Gallegos, and other parts of southern Spain and from all over that worked in the canneries. They weren’t necessarily just from Salamanca. They were very well organized, they were kind of like the Italian community is now. They had a big group, they had what they called the Union Beneficia Española that was the UBE, I think it was called. There were probably a couple hundred members at one time here in Monterey and they did a lot of picnics.”
