“And what happened was, her father, with a group of other neighbors and friends, went to work in North Africa. They were farmers, they were like migrant farmers. And one time on the way back, in Alicante, they found this notice, that there were the sugar cane companies that needed help, wanted help, in Hawaii, and that was brought back to the village. It was looked over by several of the families and my understanding was that what they did was they got together as a group and thought, ‘Let’s do this. Let’s go to Hawaii and be working for these sugar cane companies.'”
